GETTING RID OF STINKIN’ THINKIN’

Are you your own worst enemy? Do you constantly battle a negative, defeated, or critical thought life? If so, you are not alone. I am right there with you and so are a lot of other people.

Most of us, in truth, can talk ourselves into a bad day within minutes after first waking up. Some days I feel like spitting nails before I get out of bed, and I have no explanation as to why. While I am not a morning person, I do want to be excited about life without depending on a java jolt to kick-start a positive attitude.

So, how can we rise above our own stinkin’ thinkin’ to think healthy thoughts? In Philippians 4:8, Paul tells us we can actively choose our thoughts:

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
Whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—
If anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

To realign your inner dialogue with God’s word, you must replace your natural thoughts with God-thoughts. So, try incorporating the following God-thoughts into your thinking today.

Today is a gift. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift and that’s why we call it “the present.” Psalm 18:24 says, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

God has a plan for my life. Begin each day by reminding yourself that God has a plan for your life that that is worth getting up for every day. “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Nothing can separate me from God’s love. No matter what each day holds, one thing is certain—God loves you. You do not have to earn His love, buy His love, or win His love. Romans 8:38-39 says, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
